Work occupies most of our time, especially for budding entrepreneurs and career-oriented employees. Too much of it, however, can lead to high levels of stress and anxiety or what we collectively know as burnout. Extreme cases of burnout can lead to a lack of engagement and physical illnesses. Prevent this from becoming an occupational hazard by taking the following pieces of advice:
Get enough sleep. Recharge from a long and stressful work day by getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Other than letting your body rest, a good night sleep allows you to take a break from the demands of work and helps you concentrate on the new day ahead.
Start a hobby. Do you enjoy cooking? How about playing the guitar? Pursuing a hobby, whether old or new, restores your interests and allows you to use different skill sets. Consider your hobby as a satisfying break that enables you to remain productive and creative at the same time.
Take a break from digital devices. Limit your phone and computer use both inside and outside the office. Using e-mail and social media occupies time, preventing you from enjoying simple yet pleasurable activities. Read a book, visit a record store, or take a stroll at the nearest park.
Use vacation days. Employers grant vacation days for a reason — for employees to enjoy a much-deserved break from work. File a holiday and go on an out-of-town trip with family or friends. Whatever it is you plan to do, make sure you find it pleasurable.
Recognize your accomplishments. There’s nothing wrong with giving yourself a pat on the back. Focus and recognize small milestones and accomplishments. Doing this makes you feel good about yourself and the work you do.
Burnout is not as simple as getting tired or having a hard time accomplishing a task. It’s an occupational hazard that can lead to physical or mental illness. Relax, take a break, and reward your hardworking self occasionally.
